The Sindh Judicial Academy
The Academy started functioning in a Court Room of the Annexe Building of the High Court of Sindh under the leadership of Late Justice Z.A. Channa, who was the first Director General of the Academy. Later on it was shifted to Bungalow No. 1 and 2 at Bath Island and then Bungalows No. 3 and 5 were also handed over to the Academy which are used as hostel for the trainees. A massive and huge scale construction and renovation work was carried out in Bungalows No.1 & 2 while needed repairs were made in Bungalows No.3 & 5 for the betterment of Academy under the supervision of the then Hon’ble Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Ata-ur-Rahman, Mr. Justice Mushir Alam and Mr. Justice Arif Hussain Khilji of the High Courts of Sindh. Thereafter Bungalow No.4 was also handed over which requires massive repairs and heavy cost. More than 10 million rupees were spent on the renovation work of the Bungalows. Amongst them Bungalow No. 1 is devoted to Administrative functions. The teaching and training activities are carried out in Bungalow No. 2 while Bungalow No. 3 & 5 are used as hostels for the trainee officers. Bungalow No. 4 is in a very depleted condition and needs reconstruction/renovation.
In view of increasing day by day requirements it was resolved in the meeting of B.O.G. held on 21-10-2009 that a residential complex be built in the area comprising Bungalow Nos. 3, 4, & 5, GOR-I, Bath Island for the purpose of housing the students of the Academy as well as Faculty Members for the City Campus. In this connections steps have been taken and studio apartment are being constructed for which stone breaking ceremony was held on 19th November, 2016 by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice High Court of Sindh Mr. Justice Sajjad Ali Shah.
As explained above, a huge amount was spent on uplifting and renovation of the academic and administration blocks. The academic atmosphere in the Academy has been given an entirely new look in respect of infrastructure and academia. At the academic block, we have two air-conditioned simulation rooms, air-conditioned library and fully equipped air-conditioned computer laboratory. The simulation rooms are equipped with all the modern gadgets necessary for instructions and teaching. In Administrative block there is a fully equipped conference room, which is also used for academic purposes like ‘Workshop, Conference, Programs like Meet the luminaries’.
The Academy has an excellent Library containing text books and commentaries on various subjects of Law as well as encyclopedias, up to date copies of Law reports viz PLD, SCMR, P.Cr.L.J., AIR, All England Law Reports, Corpus Juris Secundum, Halsbury’s Laws of England, Reported Judgments of the Supreme Court of U.S.A. , 72 volumes of Words and Phrases and also up to date editions of Law digest etc. The Library is being improved day by day and new books and journals are added regularly. At present 4824 books are available in the Library. A chart showing the year-wise addition during the last five years to books in the Library is given below:
Lodging and Dining:
The hostels have been renovated providing proper residential facilities for the trainee officers. A very elegant and graceful cafeteria with all the modern facilities is attached with the Administration Block where tea and refreshment to the trainees are provided while for some short courses lunch is also arranged by the Academy.
The Academy has all the necessary facilities to hold workshops, seminars and other academic and professional activities. The aim of the present management is to make the Academy a center of excellence. Previously, only two computers and one O.H.P. were available in the Academy. But now the Academy possesses all the necessary hardware facilities to provide quality training. The Hon. Director General has taken a keen interest in procuring a good number of new computers with advanced technology and other equipment in order to replace the old computers which were purchased in the year 2006 and then 2010. The induction of new computers with modern equipment has helped in establishing a modern e-classroom with internet facility to all the trainees.
Hope for New Horizon:
The Government of Sindh has allotted one hundred acre piece of land from N.C. No. 106 of Deh Chuhar, Gaddap Town, Karachi for the construction of a new Campus for Sindh Judicial Academy. The possession of the land has been taken by the Honorable High Court of Sindh for the Sindh Judicial Academy. Necessary steps for construction of Boundary wall on this land are under way to protect the land from land grabbers.
